Experience-Integrated Design 综合设计经验
I have read about the concept of ‘experience-integrated’ design, where form is informed by function, not just “following” it. Such design is process oriented and integrative. This sort of concept would change our designs from being asthetic to being functional. Although our designs have been evolving along culturally-appropriate lines of attractiveness for hundreds or thousands of years, current trends are towards more purposeful determinations of shape. Watchwords such as ‘Experiential’, ‘Experientialism’, ‘shape dimensionality’, ‘media tectonica’, and ‘ergonomics’ are used in reference to this design concept.
The important focus of this type of design is “What it does now, what it ‘indicates’ it can do/mean in future’. This is where form is somewhat more important than mere functionality, pure functionality. For form to follow function is a beginning point in modern design, that is basic. Yet in this school of design, ‘form is learning all it can get from the function it serves’. Realistically that means that the designer of a form is testing, checking and experimenting with form in actual use, constantly reacting to the results of those tests, refining without limit until the way that a user puts the form to use is brought to its ultimate ease, facility and quality.

Experience-integrated design accepts as a necessary prerequisite that materials skills will enable the form to superbly and beautifully serve the purpose of engaging and suggesting its function. This requires a mature design phase, without question. The forms must be used in their proper function, in real life, over and over. Form is not solely aesthetic, but tells the story of the function. Pininfarina automotive designers pioneered such a design concept, using “liquid design” first defining outer shape, then cabin, and afterwards conforming frame and running gear to that definition. Current design processes implement 3D CAD modeling of advanced natures which emulate making physical models of clay, and allow the designers to work with the engineers in creating a car from the powertrain and chassis outward to the skin, however making use of the same integrated concepts.
