Chel’s Club on Sixth Street – an old S.F. punk palace!
Chel’s Club on San Francisco’s Sixth Street at Stevenson, was the City’s bottom rung punk venue. When ‘The Mentors’ were banned from all the other clubs, they played here, with their own splinter band ‘Harsh’ as the opener. The headliner’s lead singer got into a fracas with the doorman, and was bleeding on the floor before they even got to the stage. But another couple of cups of vodka, and he was as ready as ever, on with the show!
Too bad Rigor Mortis didn’t have the time to have been in town, or they would have headlined for their friends, and made even more of a spectacle of the whole night!
These days, Chel’s is just down the street from a new hotbed of high tech headquarters activity, so maybe it’ll get renovated and become a hipster hangout with the tekkie crowd! I hope they appreciate the bits of history the old place has.
